IMO the neoliberal turn in the 90’s instilled in many dem politicians the idea that it was necessary or at least savvy to chase after voters that had gone along with Republicans, thus the current chase seen in dems like Schumer for people that voted for Trump

-also vulnerable to resistance and agitation from its left flank. Hence political figures like AOC, Talib, and Mamdani (among many others)
