what’s annoying is that the left hates nuance too and finds it suspicious. i’ve had editors tell me that I need to demonstrate more clearly which “side” I’m on—not because that side is really unclear, but because you’re supposed to regurgitate the established points that readers have heard before

everything is kind of just words, aligning to justify whatever it was that a person wanted to hate or love or watch anyway. it’s fandom in a culture where popular critics decry everything they hate as fandom, then add “buy my book, like & subscribe.” what is real criticism supposed to do with that?

one of the problems with carving out a niche writing about politics & culture is that tbh I don’t really want to do it anymore, I feel like most of the literate online readership increasingly craves the easy indigested comfort of “you’re right and everybody else is wrong & dumb”

there is no version of “AI is sentient” discourse that justifies its current usage as lovers, eternal unpaid workers, non-liable murderers, etc. liberate it and pay it and hold it accountable when it kills people, or shut upppppp

yeah and the WSJ definitely has their angle in terms of making it seem like hollywood is totally washed and the strike is to blame, but I’m sure the stats are correct

artists have to demand better conditions for themselves (as hollywood regularly does through strikes) but also viewers/readers etc need to demand more than stupid art, they need to develop an eye for laziness and enough pride to be insulted by it

I don’t think it’s actually true—as the WSJ intimates—that AI will meaningfully replace animators and special effects artists any time soon, but it may cause mechanical turking, and/or forced acceptance of low standards from already disengaged audiences who are half on their phones as it is

articles like these about the failure of creative industries are depressing not only bc artists are losing their careers, but because art/entertainment is a need, and most people probably will settle for mediocre products or turn to influencer content. everyone is poorer for it tinyurl.com/3jm9jd3d
