Mapping the Habitat Suitability of Culex pipiens in Europe Using Ensemble Bioclimatic Modelling - L Marcolin &al

Our updated map shows habitat suitability for the common house mosquito🦟: key vector of #WestNile virus in EU

Paper & map OA👉 doi.org/10.1111/jbi....
Distribution map of Cx. pipiens. Predicted probability of presence of Cx. pipiens within the latitudinal limits encompassing 99% of Cx. pipiens occurrence records. Panel (a) shows the distribution across continental Europe, while panels (b) and (c) provide enlarged views of the Azores and Madeira islands, respectively. Map coordinates refer to the ETRS89/LAEA Europe system (EPSG: 3035).

SDMs are powerful tools, but only if feed them with the right variables (be biologists, not blind programmers!). We show how data dredging approaches relying on the 19 bioclimatic variables can lead to misleading predictions & interpretation. Led by @giordanomancini.bsky.social

The Accelerating Exposure of European #ProtectedAreas to #ClimateChange

We measure climate velocity and magnitude in Europe, and estimate risk for #ProtectedAreas and species.

Paper and maps available OA
doi.org/10.1111/gcb.... @martacimatti.bsky.social
Overlay of the values within the last quartile (higher values) from each climate risk metric for scenario SSP3-7.0. Areas in the map are color-coded based on their overlap with hotspots of exposure identified based on different climate metrics (Local, local velocity; Analog, analog velocity; Magnitude). Areas with no analogues within the 1500 km search radius (NA values on land) are shown as blank spots (i.e. central Greenland). Map lines delineate study areas and do not necessarily depict accepted national boundaries.

Protect the Integrity of CITES: Lessons From Japan's IWC Withdrawal
by Cheung&al doi.org/10.1111/conl...

Can elephans learn from whales? We think conservation policy can: effective wildlife trade governance requires international cooperation, not polarization
Timeline of events creating four common threads between Japan's withdrawal from the IWC and the ten SADC countries’ suggested withdrawal from CITES: changing organizational ethos, polarization amongst members creating contradictory social orders, influence of non-state actors trumping scientific guidance, and loss of decidability for dissenting nations that causes disenfranchisement. Wildlife illustrations in this figure were contributed by Lalain Iqbal Khan (Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University).

Reconciling Different Forms of Ecological Integrity
by Mendez Angarita &al doi.org/10.1111/conl...

We sourced global maps of ecological integrity and found 3/4 of land holds high value according to one or more maps but only 1% has high value according to all!
Land area of high ecological integrity according to a selection of nine maps (a) and national-level percentage of area of high ecological integrity (b), with bars ranging from 0% to 100%. Countries are grouped on the basis of their economic category in “developed,” “emerging,” “developing,” and “least developed.” Gray areas in the bar plots mean no integrity value according to any of the maps of high ecological integrity. We excluded countries with land area <10,000 km2 from the figure (n: 85). Overlap among nine maps of high ecological integrity illustrating the agreement among the different maps analyzed (a), with zoom on West Canada (c) and the Congo basin (d); and the spatial overlap between structure-oriented (yellow) and composition-oriented (blue) approaches (b), with zoom on Scandinavia (e) and the Congo Basin (f).
