Who benefits from the abolition of stamp duty land tax?

The first answer: people buying very expensive homes. Average saving for someone buying a £10m+ home is £1.7m. Average saving for someone buying a £250k-£500k home is £5k.

b) without other reforms, it's regressive - would be 'a very, very big tax cut for rich people'

c) it's 'nothing but political hot air designed to win votes' - and probably won't have that much impact

a) it's a bad tax - but economists aren't lining up to endorse this announcement - 'Badenoch’s proposal would need more credible measures to fund it', say experts, who highlight 'need for wider reform of property taxation'.

'There Are Bad Times Just Around the Corner' - a very funny reference in observant article by @anooshc.bsky.social that's a sober reality check but not as doom-laden as the (digital) headline or this illustration.

Are you worried or confused about the proposed law to restrict 'cumulative protests'?

We've contributed to this article breaking down your protest rights and what this new law could mean

How would tougher powers for police affect protests in England and Wales?
The home secretary has announced plans to allow officers to consider the impact of repeated demonstrations

so where did the party of 'aspiration' go? out of breath? or expired?

fair enough. in the meanwhile, how about writing to some Labour MPs (and the Home Affairs committee) and encouraging them to oppose these increased police powers?
m-holms-coats.bsky.social
reminder, it has to go before parliament - in amendments to the act. the Home Secretary needs to be reminded that she doesn't personally grant these police powers ... and perhaps resistance from the public (with reminders to our MPs) might foil her regressive approach to public order.

I think people stick with X because we're used to placing convenience over conscience.

anyone sane should strip their X profile back to just a marker (to prevent ID theft) - but no posting, no replies, no DMs, bin lists ... and unfollow everyone.

then redirect to your #Bluesky.

co-ordinated public transport (accountable to a public body, under local control) is a plus ... another example of things the free market isn't much good at.

⚠️ Introducing new powers to restrict our fundamental right to protest is not the answer

During times of fear people understandably want to see action, but restricting protest further is likely to fuel tensions by taking away legal and safe ways for people to make their voices heard

looks like this petition has gone from 10 signatures to nearly 13,000 in less than 24 hours! 👍

I want us to resist the Home Secretary's performative and regressive use of the police.

but this is harassment of an individual police officer, who is not allowed to comment, in any case - and wholly unacceptable.
