1/ If sanctions were lifted today, Syria urgently needs at least $100 billion (one-third of the UN estimates) just to initiate basic recovery. This would enable small businesses and the local economy to restart.

A series of small-scale disturbances erupted in #Alawite-majority areas of #Syria on Dec 26 & 27. The newly formed #GeneralAdministration, now in power, responded with deadly force. Reports suggest the burning of an Alawite shrine in #Aleppo triggered the unrest but deeper causes likely exist.
