Elizabeth Tsurkov, for me, is an example of a rare Jewish Israeli who decided to embrace the Middle East as her home, immersed itself in Arabic language and culture, struggled and put herself at risk for justice and liberty for people in Palestine, Syria and Iraq. She's a model of how things can be.

The shooter literally had the minimalist “Loss” meme on their rifle. You cannot take anything this person said or did at face value. It’s all so deep soaked in irony and toxic fandom culture that if you aren’t actually researching this stuff for a living you really shouldn’t be engaging with it.

The laborers were hired by Goumina's company, which in turn worked for the grape producer, who himself sells his production to agricultural cooperatives who then supply Champagne houses. In this case, the grape notably ended up in Moët & Chandon (LVMH) champagne.
macglandieres.bsky.social
The article points out how the complexification of the labor and supply chain for Champagne makes it difficult to hold the big houses at the end of the chain accountable in these modern slavery cases.

They were housed in inhuman conditions and had two minders, who also got a jail sentence. Less than 1 sq.m per person, no running water, no electricity, no toilet, very little food, 10-hour workdays. Most of them were never paid.

Grape producers usually outsource the hiring of seasonal laborers to independent companies, like that owned by Goumina. The 47 men were recruited in and around Paris and transported to the outskirts of Épernay (Marne) in a bus.. for which they had to pay the ticket.

PS : i also didn't know what a "dromocracy" was before. The concept was coined in the 70s by french architect Paul Virilio and refers to societies governed by speed and the pursuit of speed (in greek: dromos - race). Even more jargonny : it is a pouvoir/mouvoir
macglandieres.bsky.social
In the end, this #PaxLogistica shows how logistics work with authoritarianism to pursue dromocratic ideals that are also geopolitical goals. Local pursuits of war, 'peace', national construction and territorial control are woven into global scripts of 'connectivity', 'development' and the like.
macglandieres.bsky.social
But the #Zangezur corridor is also the reimagination of a decades-old Soviet highway project vital to the Az SSR that never came to be because of Armenian opposition, but prefigured the 'Goble plan' proposed land swap in the 1990s - which in turned traumatized everyone.
macglandieres.bsky.social
The second case study foregrounds the #Zangezur Corridor. A vague, shifting project framed as regional connectivity that was coercively 'negotiated' with Armenia and later re-routed through Iran when resistance grew. A "corridor", specifically, is what's pursued + left undefined + contested.
macglandieres.bsky.social
The 1st case study focuses on highway construction in Karabakh: new roads are built fast, with spectacular engineering feats (tunnels, viaducts). My reading is that speed here isn't just technical, it's political. It contrasts Azerbaijan's 'progress' with Armenia/Artsakh’s slower infrastructure.
macglandieres.bsky.social
#PaxLogistica is about using infrastructure and speed as a method of authoritarian conflict management/illiberal peace. As a project of re- and de-connection, it targets at the same time the recovered territories (Karabakh) and Armenia proper, which I investigate through 2 cartographic case studies.
macglandieres.bsky.social
After the 2020 Karabakh war, Azerbaijan launched a frenzy of infrastructure projects — roads, airports, “smart villages.” I call (provocatively) this strategy #PaxLogistica and take a look at how it unfolds until the capitulation in Sept. 2023.
