well i could go deeper, but it'll start going into headcanon territory and i'd rather save that for another day 😴

what i mean by outside factors are like...things pushed on you by society that make you internalize certain ways of thinking?
for example, how growing up in a religious/capitalist society makes a lot people feel lazy for resting... i think this is as deep as i'd like to go for a mario character LOL

do i think his decisions could have been influenced by outside factors? sort of...? only as explanations though, not excuses.

i think that's done on purpose, he places all his self worth in his power, appearance and status. if he's still alive after ttyd, wherever he is, i hope he learns that he doesn't need those to have value. he's so much more than that. (shoujo filter is on, sorry)

another thing i want to add, i think he could've been a very different person had he not found the crystal star and become a rich and famous fighter. it's implied but never truly addressed that he's good with technology and he's very intelligent!! he could have been a mechanic or inventor!!

despite all the hurt grubba caused, i'll always have a soft spot for characters who just can't win. i can't fix him (i don't want to) and i can't save him.

even with all the effort he put in to change his fate of being mediocre, forgettable, he becomes a villain who perpetuates a cycle of exploitation. ultimately, he is a stepping stone to stopping a greater evil.
