Bless Assigned Media, Trans News Network, Billie Sweeney, and every other trans reporter planning to keep kicking ass this year. I walk in your footsteps with honor and tenacity. I know I am not alone.

And, as always: Fuck the NYT.

I teared up when I got to the picture of Billie in the interview. When I was first reading, I'd imagined her younger. Twenties or thirties, maybe. That's just what I see in my head when I picture trans women. Or trans men, or nb people...So often, we don't get to grow up. Or we go stealth, silent.

This TNN interview was so validating. I sat with my girlfriend - a trans woman - and narrated to her how everything we'd felt about the NYT's coverage of trans people was true. We weren't conspiracy theorists. We weren't crazy. The transphobic smoke did, in fact, indicate fire (It usually does.)

I’m not in their newsroom, but here’s what I know.

They will capitulate and capitulate and capitulate. They will let themselves rot from the inside out until they’re Winston from 1984, rewriting facts to please the powerful. But reality remains. Someone else will report on it.

I’m a newer journalist, but I can already feel the fact that there is something sacred in this work. Sources trust us with their stories. Readers trust us to inform them. On some level, we are trusted as guardians for reality itself.

The NYT and WaPo have proven they don’t deserve that trust.

Your stuff has been making me smile for like a year at this point! Plus, dunking on the Telegraph felt like the best possible time to plug the Daily Telegrift.

Hope you keep doing what you’re doing, gal.
