...but that got superceded by a "close enough" school of thought that prioritized speed and conciseness. The former group tended to be individuals crafting code from scratch every time; the latter tended to make modular and reusable code, and could work as a team on big projects.

I read a neat little essay about the history of programming not so long ago, talking about different approaches to coding in the early days. There was a school of thought that you code could be as slow and bloated as it had to be if the output was as good as it could be and the UI was clean...
