Today's harvest

My wife has been away for the weekend. I’m kind of going feral. I’m at the point where I’m drinking wine watching everything that Guy Richie has ever made and yelling while I watch. Am I even an adult?

Just a few garden pictures. We have had the most bunnies this year than ever before. They’ve taken out a lot of the plants and flowers. We do still have a beautiful bounty. This year it’ll be enough for us, but probably not much to share with others.

Not a garden update, but a life in general update.
We lost our sweet baby Khaleesi last week. She was the most beautiful and sassy corgi this world has ever seen.
14 yrs is a good long life for a corgi but it wasn’t nearly long enough for us.

My moonflower is extra happy this year. Our granddaughter’s carrots and cabbage patch is looking crowded but healthy.
The greenway has been taken over by giant ragweed and wild cucumber vine.

Itty bitty brussel sprouts, a beautiful eggplant flower and the pumpkin vine that we did not plant.

Things are picking up in the garden. I harvested the 1st round of catnip, 45 cloves of garlic, a few tomatoes & 4 cucumbers.
Bunnies have destroyed beans & lots of perennial, but I guess that’s fine ….
I planted more bean seeds today, hope it’s not too late in the year to get at least a few.

It’s finally a reasonable humidity level to get the perennial garden weeded but now the mosquitos are killing me. :(

Khaleesi and I spent over an hour in the garden together. She is so happy sitting in the dirt. It breaks my heart knowing this will likely be one of our last garden afternoons together.

A friend and I went to a beginners birding event this morning with @wiscobirder.bsky.social.
We had so much fun & learned a lot.
I’m realizing how fortunate we are to have a wild city greenway behind the house. I take for granted that I’ll see or hear 12-14 different birds daily in the backyard.

It’s a beautiful morning to sit on the deck and read.

Not really any gardening to do today. Everything is in that stage where It just needs to be left alone to thrive.
So here I sit on the patio with my wife, dog, and one of the cats. There are so many birds singing and critters bopping around. It’s a wonderful day.

The ragweed growing in the greenway behind the house is insane this year. There are more of them than there were last year. Get ready for a sneezy and congested autumn.

Took a mental health day off work and am spending this dreary day in the camper with the dog and one of the cats.

Our granddaughter was her a few days. She’s been into birds lately, so we spent an afternoon at the botanical Gardens, identifying birds doing some nature photography. She took almost 300 pictures on our old SLR! She helped me a lot with gardening too. I love seeing her playing in the dirt. :)

Not much gardening action because of all the rain.
Instas I’ve been playing Palia. The Elderwood expansion is beautiful. It’ll be hard to put down when the weather clears up.

I hate the smell of pesticides. Most of it neighbors want lawns that look like carpet and that spray they use makes me want to stay inside and vomit.
Interestingly, the people that do this are also the people that don’t sit outside and enjoying their yards in the summer

2025 nemesis- Every other year or so we get different invasive plants coming through the greenway behind the house.
This year I’ll be fighting giant ragweed, mouse-eared chickweed, and wild cucumber.

I got a few more perennials from the Save Our Songbirds fundraiser and hit them in. I also assembled the new trellis and did some weeding.
Outside in the dirt is my happy place.

All the plants are finally in the ground!

The dirt pile didn’t look that big, but wow! It ended up being maybe even a little bit more than we need, which is great.
About 80% is spread where it needs to be. We needed to stop when the thunder started yesterday. The plan is to finish up this afternoon.

It’s dirt day. We’re getting 4 yd.³ of dirt delivered. That’s 8 to 12,000 lbs of dirt depending on how wet it is. It’s supposed to rain & storm all afternoon!!! A tarp is laid out on the driveway for it to be dumped on and another ready to cover the pile as soon as it gets here.
