I'd like to postulate that what you choose to read DOES matter, but not for the way others will perceive you. It matters because of what it can do for YOU. 🧵 4/5

While this is a beautiful thing, reading publicly online is extremely different from reading privately. The Observer Effect is in full force: just the act of being perceived changes the thing itself. It adds a new perspective to this (usually) private hobby, & it takes some getting used to. 🧵 3/5

I feel like the community goes through this discourse in waves every few years, but this round seems particularly far-reaching; probably because so many more people are reading and, as a result, there are many new voices in the online book space. 🧵 2/5
