The more we talk about it, the higher (albeit low) chance there is of something happening come September 2026.
Good news, however, is that it seems like ADB still lets you install apps for free, for now at least

Update on Google locking-down sideloading/3p app installs:
Hobbyists only get *limited* distribution, meaning if you don't pay them $25, you only get a limited number of installs. This is worrying for open-source developers that can't afford to pay full price for many apps.
Please make this known!
