Still, I think these two examples are the strongest opposition to your statement about the Left having some checks against total antisemitism.
Does it make a big difference if antisemitic acts are denied but tolerated vs actively embraced and promoted? Probably.

Some people might say "yeah but left-wing Baathist and Arab nationalist regimes WERE antisemitic", but maybe it's time to realize that Arab nationalism and Baathism are actually quite right wing, with Baathism being a sort of Arab fascism.
The fact that the USSR allied with them doesn't mean much.

...choose and despite Iranian Axis countries having different priorities from Palestinians; that the Palestinian cause had the same degree of urgency for Khamenei as for Gazans.

They all have precedents in Palestinian history though. Power of the individual vs determinism... a forever debate

So many gambles in Sinwar's decision, like thinking a massacre of Israeli and foreign civilians and IDF prisoners of war (the soldiers caught in their pajamas were POW in my opinion) would WEAKEN Israeli resolve instead of strengthening it; that the Iranian Axis would go all in on a war it didnt...

Thumbing your nose at your sponsors is what Palestinians have been doing since the 1960s. Look at Arafat supporting Saddam Hussein in 1990 against Gulf Arabs. Or all the Palestinian-Syrian wars in Lebanon. Or the Jordan crisis of 1970.
Sinwar simply pushed it to extreme lengths.
June 26, 2025 at 5:16 AM
Counterpoint: hourriyat al qarar al falastini, the freedom of the Palestinian decision has been THE major Fatah talking point since 1965, and by extension the major thread throughout the Palestinian National Movement's history.
Sinwar was walking in Arafat's footsteps.

How is it even possible though? How does the money make it to Gaza, from whom are they buying supplies, how can they build anything?
I'm just puzzled by the logistics, from what I've heard Gaza is basically bereft of anything not delivered by IDF approved groups

Perhaps the statement is not the harbinger of a future policy but rather the official endorsement of the genocidal tendency that the war progressively espoused.
I hope it will put an end to the idea that the war is primarily to dismantle Hamas or to punish Sinwar/Deif/Haniyeh (all dead).
March 31, 2025 at 12:25 PM
UN and in general international institutions are all about the long game. The decision on Netanyahu/Gallant/Sinwar/Haniyeh will never be universally respected but it drew a line in the sand. It might bear fruit much later on.
March 31, 2025 at 10:59 AM
It's being reported by Haaretz English as a sign of Netanyahu trying to blow up in public the negotiations with Hamas with nonsensical demands. In short, it's being dismissed as bullshit, not as a landmark declaration of intent.
March 31, 2025 at 10:51 AM
No refusal to enlist but AFAIK the 1982 protests against the massacres of Sabra and Chatila were the biggest mass movement in Israel until the Netanyahu judicial law. Might have been Israel's only true anti-war movement, with a degree of empathy for Palestinians unseen since, no?
March 20, 2025 at 9:59 AM
Most of the war in Lebanon from 1982 until 2000? Didn't end well for Begin.
March 18, 2025 at 4:47 PM
What all sides have in common is they cannot believe Palestinians could manage to pull off such an operation on their own.
January 25, 2025 at 11:02 PM
It's also an obstacle to developing empathy and kindness towards others, which are very undervalued skills in both politics and political analysis.
January 25, 2025 at 6:50 PM
Even if one doesn't care about scoring points with Western, Jewish, Israeli, or Zionist audiences, denying the October 7 massacres (or explaining them through conspiracy theories like "Israel allowed it to happen on purpose") is a huge obstacle to understanding the situation.
January 25, 2025 at 6:47 PM
It's not the worst. There's Jad Ghosn, on Al Araby TV (other Qatari joint) claiming that Israel started the war on October 7 by attacking Gaza. Christian Lebanese guy, supposedly anti-Hezbollah and anti-sectarian.

exactly, from what I gather, most soldiers or militiamen are not usually of the type to worry about human rights. Even more so when they're militiamen; the notion of a Hamas member being held accountable by Hamas for raping an Israeli woman is ludicrous.
January 9, 2025 at 11:48 AM
Weird hill to die on too.
"Yes Hamas murdered hundreds of civilians and kidnapped infants and grandmothers, but RAPING PEOPLE?! Inconceivable! Israeli lies! Hamas would never!"
January 6, 2025 at 1:21 PM
That's what it means to everyone in right-wing Israeli politics at this point? I mean that clearly?
Or is part of Likud sleepwalking into permanent reoccupation because they won't break ranks with the more outspokenly genocidal ones
January 3, 2025 at 10:58 PM
What does "defeat Hamas" even mean at this point? Since it certainly does not mean "bringing back the hostages", what does it mean?

Best article on the question right now. No clue what can be done though

For this reason I don't like how genocide has turned from being a description for a specific crime to being The Great Crime.

You can butcher, famish, or torture as many people as you want but as long as there's no "intent" and it's not to extinguish a specific people or ethnicity, you're good.👍
