The color of sunsets, the color of gold; iridescent, opalescent, oh Mother of Pearl! I followed your light away from the storm, I followed your love and it led me back home. I opened my eyes and watched a sea breeze flutter your curls as you slept next to me. Do you know what you are, precious ocean’s delight? A gleaming treasure caught fast in a net of moonlight, like the night we stood close and you kissed me with your eyes; how they sparkle like your tail on the horizon in sunlight, guiding me, drawing me into calm waters, or towards the shore of our hearts’ desires. Last night I dreamt of your mermaid tail, lovely and golden as your hair and your smile. This morning I'll kiss you, easy as breathing; we'll watch the sun rise and go for a swim. Despite himself, Izzy was enthralled with John’s make-up routine. John sat on a wide cushioned bench, upholstered in velvet and with an ornate backrest, in front of the well-lit vanity. From where he sat, Izzy could see John’s face reflected brightly in the mirror as he dabbed and blended color and shimmer. He could also see his own face reflected in the background, solemn mouth and hard eyes staring back at him. They sat in silent contrast, except for the sounds of music and laughter floating in from the common room. And John’s quiet humming. “Why, um…” Izzy cleared his throat, “why do you do that?” John glanced at Izzy through the mirror, then back to himself as he put the finishing strokes on his lips. “Because I can. And because I like it,” his reply was short and quick, like he’d been waiting all afternoon to answer that question. And, fair enough; Izzy had caught himself staring a few times today. And he remembered having given a pretty hard eye roll the time John mentioned he was the locally famous Calypso. John set the lip liner down and held Izzy’s gaze this time, his eyes softening a little. “And because I promised my mother that I’d always choose joy. I think she knew life’d be hard for me. She told me to be as soft as I liked if it made me happy.” Izzy huffed involuntarily and looked down, letting John's words hang in the uncertainty between them. He couldn't imagine being young and soft and not having to physically defend his own life, let alone being told to be soft, to do what makes him happy. He let his eyes wander slowly around the softness of the room, the luxurious fabrics, the vibrant colors, the fairy lights. Izzy cleared his throat again. John turned a bit to look at him directly as their eyes met. He fixed John with what he hoped would be recognized as a hard but teasing glare. “I meant…why do you draw a different color around the outside of your lips?” John raised his chin and an eyebrow, holding the glare with his own glamorously stern expression. Then Izzy saw the corner of his mouth twitch and he huffed through his nose as John broke into a laugh that shook his whole body. The sound of it felt…warm? There was no snark, only genuine joy that John clearly felt safe enough to show. Not a reaction Izzy was used to provoking. Before Izzy could begin to process any of this, John put his hand out and motioned for him to take it. When he didn't move, John insisted, “Come on, it's just a queen and her mirror. We don't bite” he raised his eyebrows again, “unless you do”. Izzy rolled his eyes as he stood and took John's hand, feeling his own body go tense at the touch. That got a short, gentle hand-squeeze from John as he scooched over to make room for Izzy on the bench. Izzy glared at himself in the mirror. Habit, of course, checking his hardness without thinking. Eyes and jaw not quite as hard as he'd prefer, but before he could fix his face he noticed John watching him and he fought the instinct to glare harder. “Drama” John said in a low voice, as if sharing a secret just between them. “What?” “The lip liner. Adds depth. Depth adds drama.” John picked up a tiny sponge on a little stick and very carefully dabbed his lips near the liner, blurring the color of it into the color on his lips just a little. He smacked his lips and gave a pose to Izzy in the mirror. The difference was subtle, but indeed, also dramatic. “What about you?” Izzy stiffened, knowing immediately where this was going, “What about me?” “Thought maybe you'd like to try a dramatic look for the show.” John's tone was casual as he arranged a few cosmetic items on the vanity in front of them. Izzy had to swallow a knee-jerk Well, you thought fuckin wrong. He set his jaw before he answered “I'm not performing tonight.” John half smiled at that. Shit. “Or any night. I don't perform.” John shot him a knowing look and gave a little nudge with his shoulder. “Well, in any case, a dramatic performance requires a dramatic audience.” Izzy ground his teeth. He was starting to feel defensive, like maybe it was a mistake to show up by himself, or to show up at all. His chest was tight and his mouth felt dry; he realized he was struggling not to feel irritated. “Hey,” John broke into his thoughts “you don't have to do anything you don't want to do here.” He sounded so gentle and genuine. “You never do.” Fucking hell. Why the fuck should those words in that tone in this room make his eyes water? Of course he didn't have to do anything he didn't want to do. He never did anything he didn't want to do.
