This age-old (or at least 4 / 5 year old question) is still very pivotal in our societies.

How do we weigh the impact against the cost? The benefit against the change in human thought and behaviour patterns? The effects on the climate versus the assistance which eases our workloads?

From schools and homes to hospitals and religious facilities, women and girls are not safe. This is a huge problem for everyone, everywhere. The safety of women and girls is not negotiable or left open to translation.

There is a prevalence of Western development orgs asking for “impact shots” and “sob stories”. African activists are often left feeling that the communications materials do not reflect their agency or dignity.

Share someone’s nudes, s3 s3n? You will go to jail.

And not just that, it is downright disrespectful to the person you are texting. Consent is key, people!

Read our lips and hear the message well well: Do. Not. Do. It.

Violence against women, girls and children should be named. The politics of naming, around issues that affect vulnerable communities, impact how those issues are perceived by the larger community and, in turn, how justice is served.

The manosphere refers to online spaces where men express hostility to feminism and women’s rights, and share their opinions on the reduced power of contemporary masculinity.

“Red pill” content presents skewed views on gender, relationships and power dynamics within society.

Connection can only grow when difference is honoured; when people feel seen for their unique biographies and experiences rather than flattened into an archetype based on the dominant narrative. In our work as communicators and feminists, it is our duty to create a world where we bridge gaps.

It takes many people, from many walks of life; activists, artists, lawyers, healers, story tellers, researchers and more all contributing in powerful ways. Each moment, each action, each voice matters.

Have you ever read or listened to a story about you, your people or people you know, and felt your “spidey senses” tingle? Like, the whole thing left you unsettled? You are not alone.

Oftentimes stories in Western media do not fully reflect the lived experiences of the people they are reporting on.
