I facilitate a K-8 makerspace. Been teaching for 25 years. I love to see kids who don’t fit in to the traditional academic setting excelling & finding home in a hands-on design & tinkering space. I enjoy writing poetry, taking photographs, & coding apps.
My 21st birthday, at grandparents’ house. There’s a knock at the door. Mom & grandma say “you get it.” So I open the door. There’s a middle-aged woman in a pink Miss Piggy costume. She sings me happy birthday or something. For a while. I dunno, I blacked out from embarrassment.

My mom has a long string of Christmas lights. She puts it on the tree & gets out a rubbery black remote, size of a small wallet. She squeezes it & the lights change their pattern (chase, blink, fade, etc). Thing is, the remote has no batteries or electronics. Just a small puff of air. She loves it.

I was 15, my cousin was 3. His parents were excited to give him pizza for the first time. They open the pizza box & he starts screaming & crying. They finally pull it away & ask what’s wrong. Between sobs he says “mouse pizza!” It had chopped up mushrooms on it. He thought it was bits of mice.

Growing up, my mom had to look at every Christmas tree before picking one. When I was 13, we bought one & took it home, strung up lights & hung ornaments. She stood back and said “is it leaning?” I didn’t think it was. We couldn’t fix it so she decided we had to take everything off & return it.

Oops, accidentally wrote “terraformed.” This thermoformed 3D printed bracelet was so fun to make! It prints flat and then you dip it in boiling water and shape it around something the size of your wrist. When you run it under cold water, it keeps its shape.
