Final Fantasy Villains are all about salvation through extermination - to relieve a lifetime of suffering. It sounded mad at first but now it takes total and complete sense.

In Final Fantasy 8 the moon was full of monsters, and formed a giant eye shape. Meanwhile, a crystal pillar on 'earth' drew the monsters towards it in a giant stream of monsters (called the lunar cry) which poured from the heavens...
Still more convincing than the moon landing.

The failure of 2001s FINAL FANTASY THE SPIRITS WITHIN in the West is because audiences weren't (and aren't) prepared to try something new. It was such a long time ago to be trying something so ambitious and it's never been attempted again. It was just too innovative for them.

The world in Final Fantasy X was called 'Spira' - and it is all about the cycle of destruction and creation. It was about a papacy that outlawed technology but whom secretly worshipped it behind the scenes. It was a facet of reality, more profound than it has any right to be.
