It is not “normal” to be against LGBTQ+ people. It is not “unnatural” to be a part of the LGBTQ+ community. Yet many people believe otherwise. These anti-LGBTQ+ beliefs have historically been pushed into the mainstream by large, often controlling organisations, by marginalising communities to push their own agenda Anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination and practices are, unfortunately, still seen throughout society today, even if acted upon subconciously. I’m strongly against the notion that people are innately hateful of each other. The guild can and should be place to change this. Malachy Moran-Tun for LGBTQ+ Officer. Education is powerful. By educating people, such as figures of authority in the guild (e.g., guild officers, society committee members, etc.), anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination can be brought to the forefront of people’s minds Doing so non-confrontationally allows people to self-reflect upon their own beliefs; they can change their behaviour without a feeling of being controlled, or abandoning themselves Education brings change within people, especially when change may have been otherwise scary. As a students’ union that officially supports an educational institution, the guild should too support the education of their members

Many of the most important people in my life are part of the LGBTQ+ community: close friends, family members, and people I look up to It’s devastating to see so many people in my life struggle to accept themselves: to see my mother be ostracised for coming out as gay, and my sister’s bleak outlook on life due to her gender dysphoria University is one of the biggest changes people experience; where people are (often for the first time) independent, able to accept who they truly are. I’m running for LGBTQ+ officer because I know there’s so many hidden, tragic stories like these. I want to give them good endings Malachy Moran-Tun for LGBTQ+ Officer. My story. Despite flirting with the idea of homosexuality throughout my entire life, especially in the latter half of secondary school, I only publicly came out as bi/pansexual in late 2024 I didn’t want to fulfil a false stereotype, or promote LGBTQ+ people as this separate category that have specific, often derogatory attributes I ‘coped’ by using phrases such as “as far as i know” or “I probably am” when describing my sexualityI’m running for LGBTQ+ officer because university is the place where i embraced my sexuality, and it should be for others too.

Malachy Moran-Tun for LGBTQ+ Officer. Breaking down my manifesto. Learn more and vote (March 10): malachy.gay Malachy Moran-Tun for LGBTQ+ Officer. LGBTQ+ Education for Guild groups and officers. Ignorance (intentional or not) is what causes prejudice, particularly within minority groups (e.g., those in the LGBTQ+ community). Prejudice within the Guild is still, unfortunately, a major issue, with large societies and important authority figures maintaining bigoted beliefs. Providing LGBTQ+ education directly combats this prejudice in a non-confrontational way, making the Guild a safer space for LGBTQ+ students. Regular LGBTQ+ training should be available year-round, with a plethora of different sessions being hosted by the Guild. Malachy Moran-Tun for LGBTQ+ Officer. Easy-to-use, advertised, anonymous complaint forms. Sadly, it's not pragmatic to assume that LGBTQ+ training will evaporate prejudice within the Guild. If there is an issue, students should be able to anonymously inform the Guild. These "complaint forms" should be well-advertised; students should know how to raise awareness to anti-LGBTQ+ issues. An improved complaints system should be put in place by the Guild within the first month of the semester. Frequent, LGBTQ+, Guild-backed social events. Pride: it's a celebration of who you are. The Guild should be a space which invites this celebration to happen. LGBTQ+ students deserve Guild-backed, affordable, and diverse social events. Events should be a safe-space for LGBTQ+ students, providing everything from meaningful discussions with LGBTQ+ people of similar experience, to simply just having fun. The Guild should support at least one major LGBTQ+ event per semester, as well as many smaller events throughout the year.

The @unibirmingham.bsky.social Guild still has many positions that express anti-LGBTQ+ views. This because of misinformation, not an innate hatred. I pledge to work towards eradicating LGBTQ+ ignorance, ensuring safe-spaces across the Guild.
