Staying at mam’s house, saying hello to Pie

Hornet mimic hoverfly. Found it drinking from the buddleja on my balcony. Huge (maybe 2-3cm long), very loud flight, and even made a good show of avoiding hovering, but the eyes are a giveaway. East London, UK.

The thorax is shiny brown and the eyes are very large and take up almost the whole head. There’s also no antennae visible. The same hoverfly on the same flowers, but viewed from the side. The reveals the antennae are just dark fluff and the black bands on the abdomen do not go all the way around and break at the midline.

My mallow flowered! This one has been doing very well since planting but I didn’t expect it to bloom this year. There’s not been many bees visiting this year so hopefully this might entice them a bit.
A large, chiffonous and vibrantly pink flower, speckled with water droplets and with a large cluster of stamens protruding almost obscenely from the middle. A mint plant tries desperately to photobomb from the side; it can’t stand not being everywhere at all times.

It’s DK, fresh up from a super long molt!
DK, a purple pincher hermit crab, hanging at a horizontal angle from a sea grass hammock in his tank. He is looking at the camera excitedly. His bright purple with white spot pattern is very visible and he has long white hair on his little claw. There are many sea shells visible in the background.

A while ago I adopted three crabs who hadn’t been kept in great conditions, and they were quite injured. But this one has made it through a molt and he’s looking better than ever, with fresh new toe tips and long antenna. We’ve named him DK!

This year’s ladybirds are reaching their final instar and they’re big enough to photo now! This one is doing it’s very best to devour me, even though I’m not an aphid. Adalia bipunctata, two-spot ladybird.
A ladybird larva standing on my hand, it has a long orange and black abdomen covered in spines. It’s about a centimetre long. The jaws are barely visible and clearly not doing anything to me.
