The best thing about being a dog has to be not knowing that the zionist entity exists.
June 25, 2025 at 3:18 PM
…but the enemy dog didn’t come out to the gate yapping insults in a fury.

Instead, I got a glimpse inside the halway and it turns out his human has an @eirigi1916.bsky.social calendar right at the entrance and I love him for that 🫶🏽🥺

The dogs might be enemies, but the auld wan is my comrádaí 🇮🇪✊🏽🇵🇸

Lobo (my dog) has a mortal enemy down the road and they hate each other with a passion. We pass by his house almost every morning during our walks, but we’re usually too early and the enemy is still sleeping inside.

Today, the door was open…

To finish the Fes stop of our trip, here is the courtyard of the Maristan of Sidi Frej, founded in the 13th century. It served as a hospital & hospice for the destitute and mentally ill up until the 20th century. Nowadays, it houses shops.

And 2 interesting signs from our walks around the medina.

My favourite part was looking out the windows (strategically placed around rooms to improve ventilation) at the emerald green rooftops and minarets around.

Although the Mosque and University of al-Qarawiyyin is closed to the public, visitors are able to visit the Al Attarine Madrasa (school of the perfumers) next door.

The madrasa takes its name from the Souk al-Attarine, the spice and perfume market.

This was the last madrasa we visited on our trip.

Next, the Mosque and University of al-Qarawiyyin, which is the the oldest continually operating higher learning institution in the world, built in 857–859. It transformed from madrasa to university in 1963

Visitors are not allowed inside, but we were able to admire the courtyard from the entrance.

On our 2nd day in Fes, we visited the Nejjarine Museum of Wooden Arts & Crafts, which shows many incredible examples of woodwork for all kinds of uses: architectural, domestic, in the farm, in toys, in ceremony like marriages, etc. highlighting differences in regional styles.

No 📸 allowed inside.

Love this smell so much 💜

I don’t suppose they’re in Agadir airport to catch some waves and enjoy the Moroccan sun… 🤬🤮🖕🏽

We ended our first day in Fes with a delicious dinner at Riad Laaroussa. The stairs to get to the terrace were steep, but the food, the wine from the Meknès region and the views from above are definitely worth it!
May 8, 2025 at 8:26 AM
While walking back to our riad, we stumbled upon Fondouk Barka – a building with a courtyard that served as both warehouse and accommodation for travelling merchants. Nowadays, foundouks mostly house shops.

This one was closed for the day, but the guard let us into the terrace for a sneaky peek 👀

Here is master weaver Hyani Mohamed inside his studio, weaving a very fine djellaba made of cotton and silk thread.

His work is beautiful and he has allegedly woven djellabas worn by the king of Morocco himself.

I wanted to buy one of the fine cotton fabrics he has woven, but couldn’t afford it ☹️

After visiting the tannery, we took a peek inside some of the beautiful buildings of Place Lalla Yedounna, where local craftspeople have their workshops. It was the evening and it was also International Workers’ Day, so many workshops were closed, but weaver Hyani Mohamed invited us into his studio.
May 8, 2025 at 5:45 AM
Of course we also had to visit the Chouara Tannery, the largest and oldest tannery in Fes, still in use to this day.

Much like the tannery in Tétouan, the smell here wasn’t at all inviting, but we had a handful of mint leaves to breathe through.

Bou Inania Madrasa is the only madrasa in Morocco that also functioned as a congregational mosque.

Today, it serves as a beautiful building for tourists to admire its intricate Marinid architecture.

The Marinid dynasty controlled present-day Morocco from the mid-13th to the 15th century.

After our calming morning of weaving, we had a delicious lunch in Café Clock next door and then crossed the road over to Bou Inania Madrasa. This school of Islamic law and jurisprudence was built in 1350–55 by Abu Inan Faris.

Our stay in Fes began in the best possible way: with a morning weaving workshop at The Anou Cooperative!

We learned to make pile woven mini rugs following traditional Amazigh designs with Moroccan wool.

It was the perfect calming antidote to the crazy tour we’d just finished 😌

Here’s a little poignant excerpt from the book ‘Pay no Heed to the Rockets: Palestine in the Present Tense’ by Marcello di Cintio.

I’ve had a cold for the past 3 days, so @ingoldsbyben.bsky.social has been pampering me with loads of lemon, ginger and honey juice from the market in Tanger 😌

He also brought me a beautiful book from the aptly named ‘Mexique Bookshop’.

Finally, the tour ended in Fes and everyone was delighted to get off the conveyor belt.

Here are some photos of the way from Merzouga to Fes. The Ziz valley, where millions of dates are harvested every year, and the Middle Atlas mountains in the distance.
