In the United States age and state politics have major effects on level and changes in death rates. The following graph displays some death rates, number per 100,000, for age 44-64 by party. See the larger graph and read the text by clicking 🧪💡☠️ ALT for more information.
Why would middle age non-Hispanic white death rates in the United States not be going down in the pre-COVID years like they are in every other economically country? And why would they be going up more in Republican voting states than Democratic voting states? In the United States death rates have only gone up in the parts of our population exclusively covered by private health insurance. I think the fact that these death rates have gone up more in Republican voting states than in Democratic voting states. I have not displayed the data for mixed party voting states but if I* did the line would be close to halfway between these two lines. I can not find data to measure the rate of health insurance coverage of the middle aged or rates of coverage denial of the insured in states but if I had the data I strongly suspect both the lack of coverage and treatment denials would explain these higher rates.
