I described the Japanese law here to a driver once, and her response was to tell of a friend of hers who had married a Japanese woman who had threatened to take the child in a divorce. It had never occurred to her that it was an actual legal thing.

This is also a plot point in two Digimon series (Adventure and Frontier), and the novel Brave Story. Brave Story makes it very clear that the father is all too happy to leave behind his wife and son for a long time flame... because he essentially got tricked into marrying the main character's mom.
