Holy shit this was good. A story of female captives of the Islamic State in Iraq, and their lives before, during, and after. Paints an impossibly vivid picture of the fear, resilience, and hope they held. As awful as you'd expect, so trigger warning ⚠️.

This should be mandatory reading. Written by a journalist and scholar; very readable, filled with stories that put human faces to the facts. Really articulates the intersection of poverty, gender, sexuality, and race with disease risks. Very eye opening.

An autobiography of a young woman who escaped a deeply religious & abusive upbringing to emerge her own self. The more I read accounts of homeschool/ survivalist households, the more convinced I am that they are created purely to provide the men folk with helpless victims.

Another great book! Short windows into the lives of Lao refugees as they adapt to life in Canada. All the love, fear, and hope you can stand

I didn't realize I'd read this before when I picked it, and it was even better the second time. Short stories filled with fantasy and imagination.

Interesting article on the idea of regression to the tail, meaning events tend to get larger, as compared to regression to the mean in populations. Climate change, #pandemics, and other #disasters are following the tail and not the mean. That should scare us

The law of regression to the tail: How to survive Covid-19, the climate crisis, and other disasters
Regression to the mean is nice and reliable. Regression to the tail is reliably scary. We live in the age of regression to the tail. It is only a matt…

So while I'm seeing far fewer white supremacists, MAGAts, and other vermin over here, there are a lot of letchy dudes. Could do without that. #pornisfree #downboy
