Why #ComplexitySci is fascinating?

#ComplexSystems are ubiquitous!🧬🦠🧫🔬🐠🦜🧠🌪️🧪
And provide an analytical framework to study the behavior of phys, bio, eco, human & artificial systems #AcademicSky

Curious? I write about them 👉 #ComplexityThoughts: manlius.substack.com

As usual, I'd say, it's our fault.

When the most credible voice for freedom turns out to be an actor who once played a rebel, you know history has a strange sense of irony.

Who could ever have imagined when I played a fictional rebel who joined the Resistance to oppose a criminal Authoritarian & wannabe King, it would be happening in real-life?

Between rocky Earths and gas-rich Neptunes, there are worlds that should exist but don’t. Why?

New exoplanet surveys reveal how stellar radiation may strip planets bare, showing that our solar system isn’t the rule: maybe it’s the exception.

And these huddles are not static blobs.

They are dynamic: penguins shift in slow traveling waves, circulating between the exposed edge and the warm center.

This constant motion ensures fairness and resilience: pure self-organization (cooperation) in action!

Emperor penguin huddles are a breathtaking example of emergent cooperation

1000s of 🐧 self-organize into dense clusters that conserve energy: sharing warmth, shielding from the wind and lowering metabolic costs. A collective solution to Antarctic survival.

Nearly 4,000 y ago, Egyptians finished their pyramids

Meanwhile, across the ocean, termites in NE Brazil were building something even larger: a hidden empire of 200M mounds, over an area the size of UK 🌍🐜

Still active today, a masterpiece of non-human engineering!

This is very interesting, Ricard.

Once you got it published on a journal, please get in touch: it could provide a nice trigger for a #ComplexityThoughts post.

Each mound is ~2.5 m tall, 9 m wide, part of a vast tunnel network moving 10 km³ of soil.

To make sense of it, that's about 4,000 Great Pyramids worth of earth.

Proof that we’re not the only species (bigger than microbes) re-engineering the planet.

A vast 4,000-year-old spatial pattern of termite mounds
Martin et al. show that in Northeast Brazil an estimated 200 million, regularly spaced, termite mounds are up to 4000 years old. Each mound is 2-4m high by 9 m in diameter; they occupy 230,000 km2, an...

Thanks Michele, it was due!

We have often released our code and the data, but we were lacking a centralized platform with well organized indices.

Also, we were lacking production-ready python/R packages developed by us.

We hope that our latest effort will be of help for the community!

🚨 Thrilled to release the official repository of the @comunelab.bsky.social!

It centralizes access to decade-long research outputs, including 57 data sets and 22 code libraries.

A titanic effort: 28,000 lines of code

We hope to accelerate #openScience in #ComplexSystems

The digital age means that people trust the content that is produced or spread by individual accounts, by influencers regardless of their ideological leanings, more than they tend to trust established institutions’ accounts. And that is inherently dangerous

- AI will lead to 99% global unemployment
-he fears super intelligence will kill us all
- he is sure we all live in a simulation

All of this w/o providing any scientific argument.
