Then perhaps there is a tragedy. A postpartum mother who should've gotten help, but did not. Under the cover of therapy-- A father, a mother who begin believing they are not fit to be caregivers. The first tests are drafted. The test comes out and yes, there are problems, but nothing that cannot be ironed out. And you think--those children will be safe now. But now, anyone with mental illness, with a criminal record, is separated from becoming a parent. And you think...well, that is sensible. Because you've never known anyone like that. So you think they are like the stories? Dangerous. Violent. Expand. Suddenly it is as simple as a diabetes diagnosis. Cancer. AIDS. And you are not allowed to have children. It is deaf couples. Disabled couples. Poor couples. And you think--well, maybe they shouldn't want children. Some gene, some history. And suddenly--you are a criminal. One day--you. You think of someone who isn't exactly like you. --Human hate can adapt to anything. You think you are safe. But if someone hates you--they will come up with the reason after the fact. Only then do you realize what you put in power. Only then do you realize what you stripped away. There is terrible power in a joke. In a story. In taking the truth and making it ugly.
