Yeah, definitely cut from the same cloth as the Gun Club. I should've name-checked them in the write-up.

In an instant it was over, one wrong move's all it takes. And the only one left standing, would be the bad hombre...

2000 Great Songs #1113: Bad Hombre. One of those songs from my 80s college radio days that still randomly pops up in my head, the Jet Black Berries blending 60s garage rock, cowpunk, and Spaghetti Western imagery. Perfect for a Tarantino soundtrack.

Great stuff. But I’m sitting out the Geese train.

Great song; hadn't really made the connection (didn't pick up that album until a few years back). I tend to think of the Feelies' "Boy With The Perpetual Nervousness" as kinda vibe-defining.

Thanks! (I think the name of the blog/book turns some people off, but it was how my taste in music was described by an old friend and it seemed... fair.)

Hope you can complete the film. I don't know much about Freedy's life outside his music, but sounds fascinating.

Odd and unfortunate timing. And once again I have Mr. Hickey to thank for my understanding of Dreja's contributions to music history. Another good reason for those who haven't yet checked out the Dazed & Confused two-parter to do so ASAP.

Not to steal Jim's thunder on Feelies-adjacent music; but to whet your appetite, here's my Great Lost Feelies Album.

2000 Great Songs #1112: Car Song. For a brief moment in the alt.rock 90s, Elastica's debut was the coolest thing going, packed with killer tunes; I was partial to this one, a driving song full of wicked hooks.

2000 Great Songs #1111: The EMI Song. Between his stint as the teen singer of the Box Tops and his formation of the legendary Big Star, Alex Chilton briefly tried his hand recording some solo tunes. This one isn't necessarily great, but has a warm, nostalgic vibe I adore.

Yeah, I love a lot of Falkner and Manning's solo records, so I find it frustrating that this is harder to get into. Maybe if they'd been around a decade later, less aligned with 90s alternative rock, the songs could've been more approachable. Still, a few songs that work well when I'm in the mood.

2000 Great Songs #1110: The Ghost At Number One. I sometimes found Jellyfish's brand of 90s power pop a little too jagged and alt.rocky, a band better in concept than execution, but when they nail the hooks it's hard not to feel a bit giddy.

I like that as well... though you could put That Year on a record with 40 minutes of dead air and it would still be a great record. Personally, I tend not to listen to their albums very often; I've got my favorite tracks burned to a mix, and that one does the trick for me.

Get Lonely has two of my favorite Mountain Goats songs, Half Dead and Woke Up New, and for those alone qualifies as great. Probably 2 of the finest divorce songs ever written (up there with Josh Ritter's New Lover).

The pretzels just bring down the whole experience. Maybe if they used better pretzels, but still probably too dry. I'd prefer nothing but the Chex squares (though the top snack is the rye chips in the regular package).

It's so deceptively sunny on the surface, but some of those lyrics...
