So it's almost like they're double removed, unable to see the severity of the problem because they're so far away from experiencing the issues themselves

I will say I think it might be more of a "age + privilege" thing. A lot of the people I've seen engaged in the protests, calls for action, etc have been older folks, far more than I would have expected- but they're the older folks who are affected day to day. Congresspeople, "elites" don't have that

Is Axios really that bad? It's seemed more reliable/less clickbaity than some of our longer standing local news "papers"/sites for local stuff. Maybe they're worse on national but I generally had a good impression of them compared to a lot of news sources nowadays

What game engine is this in?

Probably not what you're dealing with but in Clickteam Fusion recently had a case where the code was based on animation playing and while identical to the animation facing right, the anim. facing left didn't loop so it wouldn't recognize the left-faced one as playing
