Caveats!

Data has limits. AIS creates blind spots, and distinguishing mid-water from bottom trawling is complex. Sometimes, boats use the wrong labels. We built these caveats into our reporting.

But imperfect data is better than no data. It forces accountability and moves the conversation.

The source code for our analysis tool is 100% open on GitHub.

For now, we've only done UK MPAs. We want others to fork it, improve it, and use it to monitor their own local waters. Transparency is a weapon for conservation. 🔓

Lyme Bay Was Meant to Be An International Conservation Success Story. So Why Are Fishermen Losing Faith In It?
This is *the* success story when it comes to marine protection.

It works like this:

1. Select a UK Marine Protected Area.
2. Choose a timeframe.
3. You get a generated report on fishing intensity, vessel presence, and trawling hours.

All of this is powered by the @globalfishingwatch.org API.

Global Fishing Watch already does a fantastic job publishing a trove of data spatial fishing data. We wanted to make it even easier for anyone with no expertise whatsoever to access MPA-centered fishing data.

So we built an interactive web app that does just that: ukmpas.zmescience.com

Every single company, government or individual celebrating the IEA's new fossil-explosion scenario is also celebrating the heating of earth by three bloody degrees:

Thanks! We've received much more than we thought we would so it'll take a bit but I'll get back to everyone.

Plus the rich irony of someone moving venture capital money around talking about "real jobs".

This campaign of harassment (Danya isn't the only one baselessly accused by Kramnik) and FIDE's reactions are a stain on the world of chess.

Chess deserves better. So did Danya.

If someone said, 'we built a model, running on a cluster of re-used PC servers, with tagged for proper attribution docs as a source, to test how these methods work' I might be tolerant. But 'we used Claude' means this: www.technologyreview.com/2025/05/20/1...
We did the math on AI’s energy footprint. Here’s the story you haven’t heard.
The emissions from individual AI text, image, and video queries seem small—until you add up what the industry isn’t tracking and consider where it’s heading next.

Not excluding either necessarily but we're especially looking for stories that would not be widely covered in the media.
