The difference is that the hostages were taken from their homes by Hamas to use to negotiate with Israel. The prisoners are various criminals who were given due process in a court of law and found guilty. Read the NPR article, unless you think NPR are Zionists too...

Hamas realized it made itself look bad when the bad condition of the hostages was revealed during the last release. This time, they obviously fattened them up for weeks beforehand. The hostages were tortured, beaten, threatened, and starved on a daily basis for most of 2 years.

If a 15 year old boy is part of a military organization and is in combat on the battlefield, it's not illegal for the other side to kill him in battle. There's no way to stop and ask people for an ID check in the middle of a firefight.

Two staff members at the Israeli Embassy in Washington, DC, were killed Wednesday night near the Capital Jewish Museum. The suspect, 30-year-old Elias Rodriguez of Chicago, was detained by security after entering the museum and could be heard chanting “free, free Palestine” while in custody.
