I’m so happy to share a project very close to my ❤️ launching this September: Atlas de Científicxs Latinoamericanxs que Inspiran ✨
We’re currently collecting nominations!
This atlas spotlights researchers from LATAM who trained in the North & returned home to lead labs. Here’s why this matters 🧵👇

As our Goodbye Flat Biology conference in Essen coincides with #WorldCancerResearchDay, what better way to mark the occasion than with a group photo? #WCRD @wcrd24sept.bsky.social

Thank you so much for supporting us, and even more importantly, thank you for inspiring us!

Of course! I really wish I could do more! If something comes to mind, please let me know. I’m keeping you and your family in my thoughts 🫶🏻

Severe flooding hit parts of NC, including Chapel Hill, damaging homes & displacing many. One of them is Chrystal, who now has to leave her apartment with her family. Chapel Hill is a town I was lucky to call home, and Chrystal is an incredible mentor & role model. If you can help, please do ⬇️

Good morning. Today we start the process of cleaning out our home and figuring out what we can keep before we have to vacate. I’m sure it will be tough so I’ve dropped my Venmo below. Please don’t give if you are strapped. We will try to set up an official donation page later but that takes time.

To this point, we are being told to vacate our apartment immediately, with no help, no resources and nowhere to go.

Oh no, Chrystal, I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this 🥺. Thinking of everyone affected, but especially you and your family! I don’t have a US bank account anymore so I can’t Venmo, but let me know if there’s any other way Alex and I can contribute and/or help.

We want this Atlas to be a growing, living community effort: the more people who know about it, the more inspiring stories we can share! If you believe in uplifting Latin American science, please help amplify this message by sharing, tagging, or nominating🙌!

Last but not least, I truly believe Latin American researchers bring essential perspectives to global science: They’re deeply connected to social realities, incredibly resourceful, and resilient simply because they *have* to be. We need more of their voices, not fewer.
mariamhincapie.bsky.social
One thing I ❤️about this atlas is that many of these scientists have navigated fellowships, grants, and global networks, and they bring that knowledge back.
By highlighting them, we help build mentorship lines across borders and inspire others to follow (or return) with purpose.
mariamhincapie.bsky.social
These scientists don’t just do great research, they often build research environments from scratch.
In deeply underfunded systems, they start labs, navigate broken bureaucracies, mentor students, and fight to keep science going.
They’re role models but still are often overlooked.
mariamhincapie.bsky.social
Also, #RepresentationMatters. It makes a difference to see someone who shares your language, your accent, your background, doing the kind of science you dream of doing. That’s powerful, and that's something I wished I had when I was graduating from my bachelor's for instance.
mariamhincapie.bsky.social
Scientists in Latin America often face limited funding, infrastructure, and opportunities. Many leave to train abroad. Some come back *often with fewer resources or recognition* to do science in and for their communities.
That choice takes courage and deserves visibility.

A bit late to post, but a couple weeks ago I attended my 1st international conference—and had to share my hype! #EACR2025 @helloeacr.bsky.social

Welcome! Hope your pain gets better soon 😊.

Add shoulder pain on top of that! Hot compresses and trying to take breaks in the middle of incubations to do some stretching exercises helps me a bit.
