Thanks, Dustin! It's a fun campaign and it's bringing back lots of fond memories of CASA and HOMEChem.

Today, I received a termination for my National Science Foundation CAREER Grant, which employed a post-doc and many undergraduate research assistants.

🧪 Reports from inside NSF - staff were informed another huge set of grants were terminated today, that NSF will have at least a 50% total RIF, & no Acting Director has been appointed.

So, who is leading NSF?

Preliminary number of NSF grants to be terminated today is ~600, per sources. Including last week's cluster, this would put the total around 1,000.

I just got the email, my funding request to #NSF was approved a while back, but NSF will not provide the funds.
I feel awful for my students.
I feel awful for my program manager.

---ATTENTION---ATTENTION---

I have now heard from several reliable sources outside and inside NSF that the fears about research.gov are not well-founded.

I apologize for contributing to excessive concern.

But, better safe than sorry these days...

This administration plans to eliminate NOAA Research, which costs every American citizen less than a cup of coffee a year. Do you like knowing the weather forecast? Being warned of hurricanes, wildfires, tsunamis? It will all go away if the public does not act.

😍 look 👀 #Boulder voters! If they can close 54 streets, we can close two more blocks of Pearl Street. Sign the petition to get this on the November ballot.

A reminder that if the government can send migrants to a prison camp without any due process, it can send U.S. citizens there, too. I know because this happened to me and my family in 1942.

Here's the monthly future-fantasy Keeling curve update:

Based on the most recent NOAA data from March, 2025, CO2 is now expected to peak in the year 2129 at 554.01 ppm. This is the first time the projected peak has been above 550 ppm and the first time it's been more than 100 years in the future.

Former Congressman and NOAA building namesake David Skaggs is leading a demonstration outside the NOAA-NIST campus in Boulder on Monday, March 3, at 11:45.

I imagine we are all deeply troubled by the largely lawless and undemocratic actions being taken by the Trump Administration. What to do?
Have no illusion that citizen protests alone will turn things around. However, speaking out can bolster the efforts of those in elected office who are opposing the incremental destruction of the democracy. And those in public service who simply want to do their jobs. And provide some sense of purpose for the rest of us, lest we acquiesce.
You may wish to join me on Monday, March 3, at 11:45 to take a stand for what we believe outside the NOAA-NIST "campus" on South Broadway, just a bit south of the intersection with Baseline Rd. in Boulder. Those who work at the NOAA labs are at the forefront of understanding and tackling climate change. Signs will be welcome: I'm thinking of "Trust Science" and "Honor Public Servants".

At least 880 NOAA employees were fired today with hundreds more expected as soon as Friday. Right as there's:

🔥 a red flag warning for most of Nebraska and Iowa
🌪️ severe weather season picking up next week in the South
🔥🔥 "significant" wildfire potential for the Southwest and Southeast next month
