"Air filtration, far-UV? Ooh, sounds expensive to me. Best just keep it to the private hospitals." Those making the decisions about possible mitigations are very much price of everything, value of nothing types, unfortunately. Watching them tie themselves in knots during the inquiry was revealing.

That sounds odd to me, but then I've not really encountered many overt racists in my 50+ years, which I suppose is a surprise, really. Especially as I live in probably one of the least cosmopolitan areas of the country.

Erm, I never claimed you shouldn't show solidarity with those affected by this awful government! Please don't read something into a comment which wasn't intended. The current government is obviously nodding and winking at Reform voters. I'm aware of Niemoller, so what it might mean in future.

Oh, I think you'll be OK Dan. Your face is in the correct bracket of the Dulux colour chart. Which, let's face it, is what all this government position is about. I pinched my nose when voting for Labour in the general election to get rid of the Tories. That's something which will never happen again.

For all the twitch, his point about poor folk suffering the consequences of their mistakes more than the wealthy is on the button. However, his idea that he takes full responsibility for his failures when all he has to lose is a few billion is less so. No jeopardy. Sounds like an absolute whopper.

Billionaires dress terribly. It's the rules.
December 7, 2025 at 10:58 AM
Sorry, should have said that it was a combination of pension fund ineptitude (LDI crisis in the lead up to the budget), BoE needlessly announcing QT AND the appalling budget itself. A trifecta of cock-ups.

My understanding of the situation is that MMT just describes how a fiat money system operates. Policy choices with this understanding would be a different matter, though most proponents are obviously left-wing so want (much) greater government spending.
December 6, 2025 at 9:59 AM
The fact that such a person could become Prime Minister is a terrible indictment on our political system and our country. About the only thing she has been right about is that her budget didn't crash the economy. That was BoE stupidity. The budget would have taken a bit longer to crash the economy!

Nah, modern engines provide plenty of grunt. Ford produce a 1.5l engine which outputs around 180hp. Enough to get a smallish car up to 60 in a little over 8 seconds. Heck, my wife's old Fiesta has a 1 litre, 100hp engine with enough acceleration to easily join a busy British motorway.

You can get a good quantity of crystallised citric acid cheaply these days and it's what I use for the kettle. Takes up less space in the cupboard than vinegar!

Quite how Mahmood can be inspired by Noem, just another viciously corrupt yes-man doing the illegal bidding of her masters, I can't really understand. Is she really that stupid? In fact, it's getting to the stage where I find myself asking that question after pretty much every government policy.

I think she must actually be a pretty good actress. I truly believed she was a mad as a box of frogs with all of her conspiracy nonsense, but she suddenly sounds reasonable and principled. Was the rest all an act to target the crazy constituency?

A little fucker as well.

Needless to say, the Chinese have leveraged all this freely-available, valuable US government-funded research in the development of their designs.
November 5, 2025 at 9:42 PM
Bear in mind that a molten salt reactor was first designed and operated in the US in the 1960s (at Oak Ridge National Lab), then quietly shelved in spite of its success of the experiments because the head of the AEC preferred fast reactors (which haven't worked very well).

Here in the UK, voter ID has just been required for the first time in a recent election. Anybody can apply for a postal vote as well. There have only ever been vanishingly small numbers of fraudulent votes cast. Oh, only paper votes as well. They are counted by hand and results are known in hours.

I'm terrified to watch Breaking Bad again!
November 4, 2025 at 11:54 PM
I watched the last few series of The Sopranos when they were first shown and really enjoyed them. I recently thought about watching it from the start and found the first couple of episodes, well, not very good. Sub-par pastiche of Goodfellas. I'm probably being too harsh, but it wasn't great.

Over here, we have Nigel Farage, though he doesn't have the same type of an, erm, 'act' as MTG. He's done very well indeed out of it financially, it must be said. Problem is that he's aiming to be a (not stupid) version of Trump and he's got the backing of the right. Same shite, different toilet.
November 4, 2025 at 8:35 PM
Which begs the question, is she lying now by pretending to be less nutty or was she only pretending to be nutty as a political manoeuvre? Either way she's a liar, of course. From this side of the pond, I always thought her convincingly insane, but perhaps she's just a really good actress?

To be fair, there wasn't criticism of Juncker for being European, just for being a coward. Most politicians are, unfortunately.
November 4, 2025 at 11:34 AM
Back in the day, I used to get The Times some days. I remember Gove used to write all sort of stupid bullshit in his leaders and I was amazed when he became an MP and was immediately given a place in the shadow cabinet. I'll always think of him as a shit journalist turned shit politician.

It's a standing desk. It doesn't matter if it is made of plywood or marble and gold leaf. If it has a flat surface and moves up and down to the desired height, it works. Our small family business doesn't have a 7 figure budget, but luckily, I can buy a £100 desk which works perfectly.
November 1, 2025 at 10:17 PM
If I had a desk at home, I'd certainly get a standing desk. I personally wouldn't go the frame+IKEA desktop route because, frankly, it is easier to buy one with pre-drilled guide holes on the desk. If you're a DIY-er, you'll probably get more pleasure from saving 20 or 30 quid than I would.
