Every time I look at Isaac this week all I can think is what would I do if the whole world was watching him starve to death while food piled up mere miles away? And then my stomach churns with the pain of even imagining such a reality. What indescribable anguish it would be to watch his energy and smile fade as his little body withered away. And yet we all watch this horror unfold. And each day our humanity crumbles further into ruins because there is no universe in which we were meant to watch a genocide live-streamed into our palms, funded by our tax dollars. Free Palestine. Feed these precious souls.

Last week I did math in Banff for the first time and it was quite beautiful (and yes, of course, I swam in that freezing cold lake).

Good last day in the Bay! A little scared for my midnight departure given that I’ve been up since 3:45am and have walked 22K steps today (so far) 😅 like I’ll either knock out immediately or be very miserable my entire flight 🫠

WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump did not rule out the possibility of seeking a third term in the White House, which is prohibited by the Constitution under the 22nd Amendment, saying in an exclusive interview with NBC News that there were methods for doing so and clarifying that he was "not joking." "A lot of people want me to do it," Trump said in a Sunday-morning phone call with NBC News, referring to his allies. "But, I mean, I basically tell them we have a long way to go, you know, it's very early in the administration." "I'm focused on the current," Trump added, in some of his most extensive comments to date about serving a third term. When asked whether he wanted another term, the president responded, "I like working." "I'm not joking," Trump said, when asked to clarify. "But I'm not - it is far too early to think about it." When asked whether he has been presented with plans to allow him to seek a third term, Trump said, "There are methods which you could do it." NBC News asked about a possible scenario in which Vice President JD Vance would run for office and then pass the role to Trump. Trump responded that "that's one" method. "But there are others too," Trump added. Asked to share another method, Trump simply responded "no." Amending the Constitution to abolish the two-term limit would be exceedingly difficult, requiring either a two-thirds vote of Congress or two-thirds of the states agreeing to call a constitutional convention to propose changes. Either route would then require ratification from three-quarters of the states.

AFGE Local 252, a union that represents Education Department employees, released a statement in which its president, Sheria Smith, said, "We will fight these draconian cuts and urge all Americans to stand up and contact their Members of Congress…to protect the Department of Education's vital work, working people, and our Nation by rejecting these political games." Minutes later, AFGE Local 252 told NPR that Smith was laid off, along with all five of the chapter's other union officers.

This is the email I sent to the CEO of the AMS. I urge anyone else who has had similar negative experiences with the editor in chief of the Notices to reach out to AMS leadership immediately.
Dear John, In light of the recent survey that I received from you regarding my thoughts on the future of the AMS, I thought it was worth bringing the below email, which I received from the editor in chief of the Notices, to your attention. Not only is this email immediately disrespectful in its opening (my name is Marissa not Melissa) the ask is also truly belittling and dehumanizing. The invitation to be on a zoom panel featuring "contrasting viewpoints" on whether or not the Notices should be diverse, equitable, and inclusive amounts to asking me to debate the merit of publishing Black and brown mathematicians in our national professional org's flagship publication. This is especially malicious following on the heels of the February 2025 edition of the Notices that featured only one article (co)authored by a Black mathematician. Of all people, the editor-in-chief of the Notices should be well aware that the AMS has already acknowledged its history of racism and exclusion of Black mathematicians, and this is not a topic for further debate. I am furious that my workday was disrupted by this dehumanizing email from someone with so much authority to shape the discourse around current events impacting marginalized mathematicians and the entire mathematics community. As one of my close colleagues remarked after reading Mark Wilson's email, "Might as well have a zoom panel on whether or not Black people should be allowed to do math." I hope you recognize the deep racism and disrespect inherent to this entire situation. I look forward to hearing from you with regards to this matter at your earliest convenience. Dear Federico and Melissa (I have met the former, who won’t remember, but no the latter) I received this email recently. ——— I was disappointed to see the Notices has stopped celebrating Heritage Months, or is at least taking a "more relaxed attitude" to them (Editorial, Feb 2025). However, if you prefer to have more regular articles about populations who have faced (and continue to face) discrimination in mathematics, may I suggest that you regularly publish some of the more insightful critics of the AMS and the greater mathematical community? [some names] In any case, since the Notices is no longer putting effort into Heritage Months, I hope that you will redistribute that effort into making the Notices a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive journal of record all year round. ——— I think perhaps a Zoom panel discussion could be worthwhile, which we can make into an article. I am open to suggestions for other participants. I would have some question starters, and might ask clarifying questions on behalf of the readers. This would possibly be part of a series of articles, in which contrasting viewpoints might be aired. Another possibility is a panel discussion between you and some people with contrasting views, which I would moderate.
