No problem, and good luck. Though I must say I mostly specialize in characters for real time uses, I'll be happy to answer any further questions you might have.

And by that point, it will only be a matter of expanding your knowledge of the parts you care about.
If you want to animate, learn about keyframes. If you want to make real-time characters? learn how to optimize them. you want to make renders? learn lighting and composition.
But that's the basics.

Rigging a character is preparing a character for animation or posing. There are several techniques generally used in complement of each other. The most crucial one is skeletal rigging, where you assign each point to be more or less deformed when you move a bone, the other one is shape keys.

Next up, I think you can start just fine by assigning different materials to different faces for colors and other material properties, but eventually, you will need to learn about creating a UV map for your textures, and learn how to use different types of textures. Or you can go for rigging.

If you wish to then learn how to make higher fidelity meshes, you might then want to check sculpting, which you will then need to combine to retopology for characters because to pose or animate then they need to deform well. Thankfully, you knowledge of poly modeling will help with the latter.

Hello.
The obvious one is modeling. You'll need to make a mesh sooner or later. The less obvious thing about it is that you can do it in two ways : poly modeling and sculpting (not always mutually exclusive). I recommend poly modeling at first, with few vertices preferably.
