In my games, gnomes tend to be more trickstery and manic (though not necessarily evil), while the halflings are community-centric homebodies.

Inviting players to collaborate on the storytelling during the gameplay REALLY boosts player involvement. Once they see how they can affect the world for good or for bad, they often get introspective and ask themselves, “How would my character want to impact the world?” and get more involved.

Give each PC a private hook before a session starts.

Text one: “Your character awakens from a dream in which a candle burns a parchment.”

Text another: “An unknown entity whispers for only you to hear, ‘Avenge me & reap the rewards.’”

Works best when the GM doesn’t even know what they mean!
