As a enjoyer of Battletech for 30+ years. Most of my Group are big into Gundam and Robotech/Macross as well.
Battletech owes a lot of its look to the 80's Robotech/Dougram designs.

They also seem to use CLG art in their standees with no IP issues.
So again they made a choice to go the route they did. It wasn't cause thier hands where tied.
