Loved funny & touching new film Pillion, exploring relationship dynamics through BDSM. Interesting Q&A afterwards with Alexander Skarsgård & writer/director Harry Lighton.

Found time today to visit Gainsborough’s House in Sudbury in Suffolk before a meeting. A fantastic museum and gallery with a mix of contemporary art, including a great Stanley Spencer exhibition on until March, alongside Gainsboroughs & Constables.

Enjoyed seeing Noah Baumbach’s film, Jay Kelly, on the big screen with a starry cast led by George Clooney. Despite his character’s flaws, it’s a compelling celebration of films & film-making. The post-screening Q&A with Clooney, Baumbach, Adam Sandler, Billy Crudup etc added to the fun.

Pleased to catch Clarkston in its final week at Trafalgar Theatre: a solid American drama lifted by three very strong performances from Joe Locke, Ruaridh Mollica and Sophie Melville.

Still can’t get my head round the bookshop in Manchester where books are shelved by title, not by author or genre (with no consistency over whether titles starting with “The” come under T or not). I guess it suits browsing but it messed with my head too much!

A great time last night seeing Nick Winston’s wonderfully silly, arch and funny production of Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein The Musical at Manchester’s Hope Mill Theatre. Ore Oduba is brilliant as Dr Frankenstein, leading a top-notch cast.

At Manchester Victoria station and there’s a long queue for Greggs while the Starbucks is virtually deserted.

The BBC adaptation of Rónán Hession’s Leonard & Hungry Paul is utterly charming, with a great cast led by Alex Lawther, Laurie Kynaston & Jamie-Lee O'Donnell. How could I resist the story of a sad socially inadequate ghost writer?

I appreciate there might be people who admire Hanya Yanagihara's A Little Life as a creative work but are there “fans” of what must be the darkest, most depressing book that most of us will ever read?

Visited Quantum Untangled, a fascinating new (free) exhibition at Science Gallery London near London Bridge, featuring artwork inspired by quantum physics. Pictured are installations by Robin Baumgarten and Conrad Shawcross - best observed in person.

Fascinating event at Hatchards this evening, with Christopher Stephens talking (with novelist AJ West) about his book, The Light of Day, uncovering a forgotten but key figure in the history of LGBTQ+ rights, Roger Butler.

Alan Yang & Matt Hubbard’s 2018 existential comedy series, Forever, is now on Amazon Prime. Meditations on life and relationships through an out-of-this-world story, with superb performances by Maya Rudolph, Fred Armisen & Catherine Keener. And it still pays off beautifully despite no 2nd series.

Urška Djukić’s sensuous new film Kaj ti je deklica (aka Little Trouble Girls) is fantastic, following a young woman navigating her sexuality and identity — played beautifully and sensitively by Jara Sofija Ostan. Definitely deserves all those ★★★★★ reviews.
