3)The republics are with us still, as formally independent states and UN members. Albeit they are not all still defined as republics, and are not all genuinely independent.

2)The establishment of the six republics - Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro and Macedonia - was of more lasting significance than the establishment of the new Yugoslavia. The new Yugoslavia proved transient and disappeared by 1992.

It's the selfish baby-boomer ethos: they bitterly resent their tax money being spent on child benefit, or on higher education, because they don't give a damn about the future generations or the future of the country. They're quite happy for Britain to die with them.

Democrats and leftists who looked to Mamdani as the face of the Resistance, and hardline right-wingers for whom Mamdani was the perfect Muslim anti-Zionist bogeyman, have been thrown under the bus. Credit where it's due; this is masterful politics of the Machiavellian type on the part of both.
