VCH Oxfordshire Christmas Lecture gave an update on work for Volume 22 including on the West Oxfordshire parishes of Chadlington (yes, Clarkson's Farm was mentioned), Kiddington, Kingham, and Spelsbury. A chance to catch up with lots of VCH supporters and make some useful contacts.

New edition of John Field's The Battle of Southsea, first published by Portsmouth Papers in 1981. It tells the story of a riot in 1874 when a huge crowd fought for four days to remove fences enclosing a small area of Southsea Common. A review will appear for www.hantsfieldclub.org.uk in 2025.

The rood screen at Shilton (Oxfordshire), carved by Harry Hems, dates from 1884 and includes what is claimed to be 'the first rood erected in the Diocese of Oxford since the Reformation' (The Builder). Is that true, and are there comparable examples from other dioceses around that date?

Until the 19th century Shilton near Burford was a detached part of Berkshire, except for the church which was included in Oxfordshire. The Oxfordshire county map of 1797 unhelpfully leaves the Berkshire part of the parish blank.

Starting a new parish history for VCH Oxfordshire, Shilton near Burford. Church and vicarage house occupy adjoining plots on high ground in the far south of the village.
