Just reread this over the weekend. Basically just reading discworld novels as they become available in Libby. Nice to read something where the author clearly sees what’s wrong with everything but is still optimistic somehow.

I’m listening to the Jays/Yankees game on the mlb app with the Blue Jays radio announcers and commercials and I just realized that Canadians pronounce Mazda with a short a sound like in smack and not “Mahz-duh” and now I’m shook.

The best part of it? Its chemical formula basically spells out nacho and it makes your cheese smooth like nacho cheese.

We’ve got a scrub mommy (just a scrub daddy with an extra layer of sponge), and I use the holes in its smiley face for cleaning things (knives in the smile and things like chopsticks and muddlers in the eyes). And I feel bad every time I stick something in its eyehole.

Technically, the Dodgers still have to close out their NLDS against the Philadelphia Phillies. They still have to win the NL Championship Series. But they will.

What Doctorow is getting at is that investors have seen it give them the shape of an economic boom, and they’re just happily interpreting that shape as the real thing, and it looks like it’s probably not.

If someone is having trouble, they can turn to ChatGPT and ask for advice and it will give something shaped like advice, even if that advice is about how to harm yourself.

We give it a question and it recognizes the shape of a question and it gives us the shape of an answer (whether it is correct or not) and we assess that shape and interpret it as a real answer.

Agreed. P-hacking generally avoids us, partially because as I always told students we are basically always working with effectively a poorly-designed experiment with limited repeatability and often inaccessible ground truth.
