but mathematically, if an R1 professor supervises X number of PhDs over their career (with X >> 1) there's no way they can all end up as clones, so other career outcomes have to be both viable and valued

a gradational progression from student to employee (high school/undergraduate -> master's/PhD -> postdoc -> junior faculty) that's not widely understood and that's increasingly broken anyway

not my generally preferred way to operate (since it hinges on bad faith) and I don't know if this is what the Democrats did, but publicly offering a seemingly reasonable deal that you're sure your adversary will refuse can be an effective tactic

The acceptance of it by the public at large is also a huge problem. We let the most powerful people in society get away with behavior that would get you straight fired from even a minimum wage job.
