My brain tells me it's the same as offering font size options that are too small for some users to use along with the ones that are big enough. But also my brain really loves subtle, muted color palettes and I'm suspicious it just wants to be told it's okay to include them.

Building a habit of always using semantic elements took me a hot minute, but has proven really valuable in helping shape the way I think about presenting content. And not just for screen reader users either, it’s fundamentally improved the experience for everyone.

So very true. Each part of the system should be considered in how it is actually having an affect on a person's experience - both digitally and physically. Accessibility shouldn't be an extra layer. It’s just design done right to begin with.

After thinking it through, it makes total sense. Sure, a negative tabindex removes the element from the tab focus flow, but then it also makes the element itself focusable when interacted with. Which is 100% the opposite of what I was trying to do to begin with.
