Since I’m meeting lots of new people today, I figured I would briefly reintroduce myself!

My name is Marlo and I’m a third year PhD candidate in History at Christ’s College, Cambridge researching elite femininity and the formation of fashionable society in late seventeenth century England

I manifested this during the #SHSConf2025 pub quiz @louisebell.bsky.social

It was so so lovely! Don’t know how I’ll survive pub quizzes without you (and the rest of the dream team!)

As always, I had the best time at #SHSConf2025 ❤️ It was an amazing chance to share some of my current research and meet some wonderful scholars! Thank you to all the team at @socialhistsoc.bsky.social for facilitating such an enriching conference!

Had an amazing first day at #SHSConf2025 - Was so caught up in the excitement these were the only pictures I managed to take (whoops), but can confirm the Black Country Living History Museum makes the best conference venue EVER!

I’ve only had a very quick look whilst running to a panel, but how cool a venue is @bclivingmuseum.bsky.social for this year’s @socialhistsoc.bsky.social conference?! #SHSConf2025
Bright blue sky with white fluffy clouds. Looking down a road there are a row of old buildings on the left side. The one closest is obviously a music shop. Bright blue sky with white fluffy clouds. Small pub called the Elephant and Castle. Red brick work has green, red and yellow tiles on the bottom section of the front of the pub. Bright blue sky with white fluffy clouds. Looking down a road with cables above. There are buildings to the right of the street. A green sign with cream writing on reading: this exhibit is closed for a private function. Sorry.

Fantastic roundtable at the #SHSConf2025 on material culture!

Featuring four fabulous speakers - @simonbriercliffe.bsky.social on @bclivingmuseum.bsky.social; @timhitchcock.bsky.social on convict tokens; @anahowie.bsky.social on portraiture & pearl fisheries & Simon Morgan on radical pottery✨
Picture of the roundtable at the Social History Society, showing one man introducing the speakers and four people on the right hand side discussing the topic.

I realize it's been a long time so figured a Life/PhD Update is slightly overdue! In the last couple months I have:

- Finished a second journal article
- Completely transcribed and quantified several account books into Excel
- Read a lot of letters
- Clung onto my sanity

And I couldn’t have asked for a better editor 😍

It’s been a while since I’ve been online (shamelessly been in the trenches transcribing account books) but you don’t want to miss out on another exciting term of WEMP!

[DM us for a Plain Text-Version]
A call for papers presented on a stlistic background with white crumpled, ripped paper and printed latin text. In the bottom left corner is a stack of antique book and a silver inkwell and feather quill.

Really thrilled to share the final piece of my Samuel Pepys project. It was a joy to be invited to film in the Pepys Library!

Massive thanks to the University Media Team and Magdalene College for making this possible.

This is almost certainly a Cambridge thing, but I've been asked if I'm named after Christopher Marlowe 3 times in the last 5 days... I must give off Renaissance playwright energy ✍️

Here's the title for anyone interested:

‘“Mis wants an upper Coate…”: Sartorial Literacy and the Fashionable Lifecycle in 17th Century England’

It's a very fun whirlwind through the lives and clothing consumption of elite families in the late 17th-century!

Cambridge friends - I'll be presenting my research at the Early Modern British and Irish History Seminar next week on 12 February at 5:15 (in the Graham Storey Room, Trinity Hall)

I would love to see some familiar faces there, along with anyone interested in the lifecycle and dress!✨

I have to say, the commitment to the bit is pretty exceptional

I feel it’s necessary to add, this isn’t my excuse, it’s from one of my students. I ✨always✨ submitted things on time in undergrad
