Salty, savory, and slightly bitter. Also an economist.
Well done ProPublica! It's great to revisit these important stories.

It's far better than WebMD, where everything could be cancer. Chat GPT gives you a sense of how likely different outcomes are. It also helps interpret test results and can give you a diagnostic tree.

One common path is that people delay having a family to pay of college, save for a deposit etc, and they eventually run out of time to have a bigger family.

Five years post-tenure isn't a big window. In economics it often takes 3-4 years from first version to publication so there is a lot of gaming around tenure, with people prioritizing publishing over new projects.

I'm skeptical that "man in studio talking to camera" is too expensive. I'd be more sympathetic if they tried to negotiate down Colbert's salary (which, amusingly, they increased in 2019).

Please don't reduce everything to race: it's inaccurate, alienating and unhelpful since people can't change their race. The medicare cuts come from persuading one working class person that others are taking advantage of "the system" (hence the work requirements).

I love my local NPR station, and some shows are great, but the choice of Maher showed little desire to be a "diverse" broadcaster (e.g. Rich Lowry and Left, Right, and Center). www.nytimes.com/2024/04/15/b...

The general idea of achieving growth that benefits everyone is uncontroversial. But many of Mamdani's specific policies (rent control, free childcare) would likely not be supported by the majority of economists.

"I found an economist who confirmed my personal opinion". Why not ask a second economist?

Bluesky really is a weird place... you point out that the search engine and home computer are useful, and require lots of hard work and capital (and luck) to make. And the reactions are extreme. We can appreciate the work Brin and Gates did and tax them more.

This doesn't prove anything. ROI should be measured relative to the counter factual that the student chose a different major (or didn't go to college). At least add some controls. Or, better yet, have some exogenous variation.

Is it more than weakening planning laws and energy regulation (e.g. nuclear)?

Should they respond? Maybe it's just really hard to improve evaluations while maintaining rigor. If a teacher went to college and had 10 years of experience, maybe they're already optimizing subject to their ability. Did they look at young teachers? (Apology: I've not read the paper)

In the past, people only have imaging when there is something wrong; in the future it will become more regular as the cost falls. It reminds me of how spreadsheets increased the number of accountants. But not all professions have room for growth (e.g. taxi drivers).

Let me rephrase the claim: Male friendships more often have a functional purpose; when this purpose is eliminated, the friendships wither.

Men are more goal focused. When young, these goals align with friends (sports, school, getting laid); when older this often means earning more or working out (as in the article), both of which are solitary.

(Aside: video games have also harmed mens friendships for all age groups)

Didn't Rogan endorse Bernie in 2020 primary and then vote for Trump? He's not a republican. He seems to believe in personal freedom, masculinity and be anti-establishment. It seems progressive democrats gave up on trying to persuade working class men.

This isn't just marketing. The name behind a policy tells us about the underlying motivation and what other policies may follow. E.g. "baby bonus" supporters may also want to ban abortion.

We people calling up the port today to ask them to put everything back on the boat and drive around the block a couple of times?

FWIW, isn't your example essentially saying "increasing supply lowers prices"? Suppose we go from (1,0),(1,0), so both agents compete over A to (1,1) (1,1), so both agents are happy with either item. Revenue drops from 1 to 0.

Should we scrap the cap on benefits too? The whole point of social security is that you get out what you put in (kind of).
