From a broken home, mature student, worked in 30 countries on 4 continents, married with grandchildren, read, write and take VERY long walks. God is nature. I am what I ingest. I treat others as I wish to be treated.
Who would be in the police or military now without a strongly held political opinion?

Change serves a purpose. Poor communication prevents change from being carried out in an effective way. If someone stood up and articulated the objective of the current blast of changes then it would give the rest of us the opportunity to assess the risks involved to resist ie imprisonment or death.

This playground stuff at Davos shows the world what they are made of. Walter Bagehot would have dispaired that the elite would open the curtains for all to see. Cannot forecast the end game, if indeed there is one. Shades of the ancien regime abound.

The capturing of ICE actions on mobile media has the potential to cause a similar reaction amongst the general public as photojournalism did in the Vietnam war.

Hypothetical: USA leaves NATO over Greenland. USA withdraws support for Ukraine and funds Russia and Europe to maintain neutrality but ultimately to decide outcome (of conflict) based on net financial gain to USA. Rerun of WWI and WWII without US troops on the ground (at least till dust settles).

Lets say that, in some parallel universe in the future, voters decide that this experiment in monarchy in the USA was unwise and that there is a return to "democracy". Has any thought been given how to disarm ICE and effect immediate cultural change within the organisation? Just planning ahead.

My impression is that these actions are of a man lashing out to postpone the inevitable, being held to account and mortality. Is there anyone out there who can cut the strings without someone worse stepping onto the stage?

The unthinkable now requires thought: that Europe sleepwalks into war with Russia over Ukraine and with the USA over Greenland. Europe may be seen as wealthy and easy meat by both.

Is the Trump case with the BBC about restitution or to minimise any future form of broadcaster criticism from overseas? How much pressure will come from govt on broadcasters and the judiciary to maintain good relationships with the USA?

UK income tax take is at its highest ever level due to the erosion of allowances due to inflation. These taxes are increasingly being used to pay intermediaries of the state for recruitment services and/or exhorbitant interest for risk free capital projects. Beef up and decorrupt state procurement.

A merry christmas, happy channukah, and yuletide greetings to all you pagans, and anyone else joining in for the hell of it or to be inclusive. Cheers!

So much for "the end of history". We are heading into "groundhog day" territory, only this time, repeating the "great games" of earlier centuries. WWIII will send any remaining mankind back ten thousand years over the course of one generation.

I have finally realised that most people's news and interest start with family then local then regional then national then international. Politicians and media who reverse this order, distance themselves from the majority, at their peril.

Many politicians are placemen, placed by either power, money or sectional interest. Keir Starmer is acting as the equivalent of a company administrator, an apolitical role, that tries to salvage a company that should be doing fine, that isnt, due to severe prior mgmt incompetence. A national doctor.

I have never witnessed a UK budget like this. Even the state media has its knives out for the democratically elected incumbent government. Without any sound rationale. The country needs a complete reboot to consider what is important and what is just noise.

I was wondering about precedent in law and its connection with the "whataboutism" that is often used as a counter to argument. Any lawyers out there, pls chip in.

The pressure that this UK government has been put under to date is unprecedented. It is like 1920's Spain when the powerful couldnt get what they wanted thru legal proces. At the end of all this, there is a sucker punch trap. Pay attention.

Just reading the Ukraine deal. Ukraine should join the EU. The EU should then leave NATO (if the USA is mediator between NATO and Russia, it is de facto no longer in NATO). The EU can set up its own aemed forces including Ukraine, and, like France already is, be independent of the USA.

Is there any genius mathematician out there who has developed an algebraic formula that links the effectiveness of politicians to their relationship with the media? Or is it simply inverse?
November 18, 2025 at 7:33 AM
The media can't get out of the habit of rubbishing government. A habit developed over the past fifteen years with some justification. They need to focus on alternative workable solutions that will not piss off the markets yet reduce inequality.

Iraq = WMD = war
Venezuela = fentanyl = war
Once the example is set, others will use it as precedent.
A war in S America could provide the justification to suspend domestic elections in the USA.

On a busy train journey out of London, I stood in the corridor, next to a Pakistani man, my age, and his teenage son. The man was scolding his son in Urdu. When he finished, I smiled and said, I have no idea what you said but it sounds exactly like how I talk to my son. Both he and his son smiled.

So many angry people. Channel the anger into encouraging people to vote, the democratic process. If that doesnt work at the next elections, accept the result that the democracy of the middle ground has failed and that a new way or new country must be found.
