Just like @partido-popular.bsky.social in #Valencia, the failure of emergency management services during #DANA is a stark warning of what could happen in the #US if moves like ‘getting rid of FEMA’ are taken seriously. Emergency preparedness saves lives—let’s not forget that.

Observations are essential to inform our actions.
Let's base our decisions on evidence: we still have the power to change our climate's course if we want.

As the climate data for 2024 continues to arrive, I've updated my graphic showing changes in various climate indicators for the recent past, and the last 2000 years.

Most notable change is a big jump for tropospheric temperatures (TLT) in 2024.

I think this is one of my favourite colourful climate chart type things, because it depicts two things at once:

- Things are going to get worse, no matter what

- The degree to which they get worse depends on decisions made today

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen responded indirectly today to Donald Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, declaring the climate accord a lifeline for the world.

What will the future of the warming stripes be?

2024 could be the start of a stabilisation of global temperatures, or it might appear to be a cool year.

Which one of these stories becomes reality depends on our choices today, and every day until then.

We are likely to regret not acting sooner.

Super handy animation from Tim showing why 2024 being above 1.5ºC does not mean the long term global warming trend is there yet. Although we're ~ 1.37 (according to ERA5).

The ocean was a huge part of the 2024 climate records. Data from Copernicus:

🌊 SST was record high from Jan-Jun 2024, and 2nd highest from Jul-Dec (after 2023)

📈 Annual SST reached record highs across nearly 1/3 (27%) of (extra-polar) ocean

🪸 All ocean basins experienced marine heatwaves
