Jesus was big into virtue signalling. Equally one of the virtues he extolled was humility. Absent humility, virtue signalling can be annoying and counterproductive.

As a former catholic, I thought the movie was remarkably generous in it's depection of the church. They absolutely present the vast majority of these men as Good Men, and the institution as a Good Thing.
