Journalists are the first line of defense against disinformation and fake news. But we still know little about the kind of strategies that European journalists use to address fake news. In this report Jacopo Custodi, me and Hans-Jörg Trenz use interviews with journalists to answer this question.

"Post-truth is not only one phenomenon, it’s a combination of aspects that amounts to a fundamental transformation of political culture in liberal democracies"

People have a lot of opinions about how to fix the "fake news epidemic". One solution is to strengthen traditional journalism. But what exactly do people want from news?

Check the video below or read our paper for one answer: www.cogitatiopress.com/mediaandcomm...

With #EUSA2025 officially over, I wanna thank everyone that I served on panels with (like @aseimel.bsky.social) and those who discussed my papers (shoutout to @siennanordquist.bsky.social among others) for helping make my work even better. I look forward to seeing everyone again in 2027!

Are you heading to @eustudies.bsky.social in Philly next week? I would love to see you at the panel "Public preferences and identity formation" in Whistler B on Friday between 2-3.30pm. I will present a paper finding that EU austerity weakened EU identification to a substantial degree.

This suggests that there is no real disconnect between supporting popular journalism and the kind of journalism that strengthens the public sphere: People want the kind of journalism that is also best suited to combat the presence of disinformation in the public sphere.
martinmoland.bsky.social
Our paper suggests that even in a time where journalism is under unprecedented threat, there may be little reason to rethink what it should do: Even as technology is changing, readers have very traditional views of what journalism should do.
martinmoland.bsky.social
We also show that views of the importance of objectivity vary very little across our three sample countries (Italy, Norway and Poland) even as journalism has been threatened to very different degrees in the three countries.
martinmoland.bsky.social
In the paper, co-written with Hans-Jörg Trenz and Jacopo Custodi, we show that people have complex views on what journalism should be. However, they remain committed to very traditional views of what journalism should be.

I have been fortunate enough to spend the last two days at @delorsberlin.bsky.social discussing EU competences and national control as a part of the “Reconfiguring Europe” program. Excited to see what colleagues like @cfreudlsperger.bsky.social and @anabobic.bsky.social are working on.

I definitely have to think three times every time I write the word bureaucrat. Almost makes me rethink my recent turn towards studying the political attitudes of, you guessed it, bureaucrats...

The paper might be of interest to @dschraff.bsky.social, @theresakuhn.bsky.social, @aseimel.bsky.social and others interested in how the policies of international organizations shape individual-level attitudes towards both the institutions themselves and nation-states.

I've been fortunate to spend the last couple of years thinking about how #politics, #journalism and #posttruth interact. In this short explainer I give my take on why quality journalism, and traditional media, are still vital even as the news cycle becomes quicker and quicker.
