This paper is a theoretical foundation of my future research, where I hope to leverage computational neuroscience and psychoneuroimmunology to further investigate how people related to each other at levels of the mind, body, and brain, + clinical implications.

This process allows relationships & loneliness to get under the skin to impact our physical and mental health. At the dysfunctional extreme may be borderline PD, where individuals report intense loneliness and unstable sense of self that is highly dependent on perceived relationships.

Much of our sense of self is also rooted in the body. As the brain integrates information from the body and the social environment, this process opens a pathway for interpersonal experiences to impact one’s own neurophysiological functioning.

People’s sense of self is closely linked to connections with others. That is, our subjectivity is interpersonal. Loneliness may reflect a sense of lacking this social piece of subjectivity.
