My comms professor sent this email to the entire class this morning. Loves how he talks about having balance but then links to Bari Weiss’s newsletter 🙃
On this particular discussion: Kind of intrigued that all of you favored federal funding for public broadcasting. I did too, once, but as our nation has become more and more hyper political I’ve becoming personally convinced that political balance is important for any news gathering organization.

That balance did exist once. It doesn’t anymore.

Below is a story which a former NPR editor, Uri Berliner, wrote for the Free Press. Berliner also looked at voter registration records for NPR’s news staff in Washington DC. There were 87 registered Democrats and 0 registered Republicans in the news room.

That’s a problem. If a newsroom has 100% belonging to one political party and 0% to the other, it’s impossible to make an argument that there won’t be significant bias in its news coverage, IMHO.

Here’s a story written by a former NPR editor which explains what he observed over time. An excerpt: Back in 2011, although NPR’s audience tilted a bit to the left, it still bore a resemblance to America at large. Twenty-six percent of listeners described themselves as conservative, 23 percent as middle of the road, and 37 percent as liberal.

By 2023, the picture was completely different: only 11 percent described themselves as very or somewhat conservative, 21 percent as middle of the road, and 67 percent of listeners said they were very or somewhat liberal. We weren’t just losing conservatives; we were also losing moderates and traditional liberals.

An open-minded spirit no longer exists within NPR, and now, predictably, we don’t have an audience that reflects America.

That wouldn’t be a problem for an openly polemical news outlet serving a niche audience. But for NPR, which purports to consider all things, it’s devastating both for its journalism and its business model.

I also don’t like her dismissing the amount of work that goes into choreo in general. Just because she moves similarly to Tina Belcher doesn’t mean it’s not strenuous af for others

I know this article is based on Ernst Fraenkel’s writing as cited by Justice Jackson, but this also describes Jim Crow policies that inspired the Nazis.
In the Third Reich, Hitler’s will replaced German law. Whatever he wanted, he did. If anyone was perceived to threaten the Nazi project of a fascist ethno-state, no legal protection could save them. Fraenkel called this realm the “prerogative state.” But the broader legal system didn’t immediately crumble under arbitrary rule. To the contrary, the Nazis purposefully left some of the existing legal system intact in the 1930s and courts were allowed to function, particularly in areas of contracts and other economic concerns. This parallel “normative state,” Fraenkel observed, enabled Germany’s capitalist system to continue against the backdrop of an uninhibited regime. Most Germans generally lived in the law-bound normative state, while Jews and other disfavored people were victims of the arbitrary and violent prerogative state. The dual state is thus two-faced twice over: it is characterized by a bifurcation in the law, but also by the facade of normalcy obscuring the fact of an authoritarian state.

You could just talk about Jim Crow. I promise you, there's no need to leave America's shores to talk about life in a fascist state

The “dual state” theory was invented to describe Nazis. The Supreme Court could take us there.
Authoritarianism—but make it look like the rule of law.

They don’t care about mothers and children, they care about the farmers, who are their base voters.
WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Program
The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) aims to improve access to nutritious foods for low-income pregnant women, mothers, and young children. After enrolling in WIC, participants receive monthly checks, vouchers, or transfers to their Electronic Benefit Transaction (EBT) card that are to be used to purchase specific, WIC-approved foods, which provide important nutrients that participants otherwise may lack. WIC funds also support local economies and providing crucial revenue to small farmers. WIC FMNP currently provides fresh produce to more than 1.7 million WIC families, while simultaneously generating $14 million in revenue for 17,926 farmers, 3,390 farmers markets and 2,894 roadside stands.[1]
